Day 2 is in the books for Event 28, $2,500 No Limit Hold’em Four-Handed, of the World Series of Poker. A hopeful 86 players returned today but that number has been trimmed to eight. Leading the field into the final day of play is Brendon Rubie after bagging 1,682,000.

Behind Rubie is James Schaaf with 1,126,000. Greg Merson, Timothy Adams, Andreyy Gulyy, Anthony Gregg, Toan Trinh and Torrey Reily remain in the field.

The four-handed action went fast and sent plenty of notable players to rail today. Annette Obrestad, Leo Wolpert, Isaac Haxton, Gavin Smith, Josh Brikis, Humberto Brenes, Lex Veldhuis, Jake Cody, Darryll Fish, Jon Turner, Tony Dunst and Brian Rast are a few that did not survive the day.

Nick Schulman was eliminated on the stone bubble when he three-bet to 12,700 preflop, Mustapha Kanit four-bet and the Schulman shoved. Kanit called holding pocket kings and Schulman needed help holding {A-Clubs} {8-Spades}. His help never came when the board ran ten high and hand-for-hand play only lasted one hand.

Veldhuis was eliminated when he shoved on the button holding {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts}. Alex Hering called with {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}. Velhuis never improved his hand and was eliminated.

One of the most interesting hands of the day came when Eric Froehlich crippled Sam Stein in a blockbuster hand. After a couple of raises Sam Stein snap-called Froehlich’s preflop all in. Stein held pocket aces and Froehlich had jacks. The flop came {Q-Spades} {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds} and Stein was well ahead. But the board completed {6-Hearts} {10-Hearts}, giving Froehlich Broadway.

Day 3 will have cards in the air promptly at 1 p.m. PST in the Blue Section of the Amazon Room. Follow all the WSOP action live on PokerNews.com

Three More Hands

• Nivo 20: 4,000-8,000, 1,000 ante

The remaining players will play three more hands and then bag and tag for Day 2.

Grinding Halt

• Nivo 20: 4,000-8,000, 1,000 ante

Play has seemingly come to a halt here with only thirty minutes remaining before the end of the day. The combination of the players being quite deep in terms of stack size and the payout jumps from place to place has caused what seems to be more cautious play around the board.

Schaaf Doubles Through Koon

We found Jason Koon and James Schaaf go to a flop of {6-Clubs} {8-Spades} {J-Clubs}. Koon checked, Schaaf bet 50,000 and Koon check-raised to 120,000. Schaaf called and the turn came {8-Clubs}.

Koon moved all in and Schaaf called. Koon held {K-Spades} {J-Diamonds} and Schaaf held {A-Spades} {A-Diamonds}. The river came {K-Hearts} and Schaaf thought he lost momentarily. Then Koon pointed he won the hand.

Schaaf Makes Wrong Call Against Gulyy

With the board reading {9-Hearts}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and over 110,000 in the pot, Andreyy Gulyy pushed out a bet of 81,000 into the middle.

James Schaaf pondered his decision for a moment before flinging in a call. Gulyy showed {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and Shcaaf threw his hand at the muck.

Slepe stave:

Koon's Trap Didn't Spring

Jason Koon failed to induce any betting.

Jason Koon, James Schaaf and Andrey Gulyy all went to a {5-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} {8-Spades} flop. Koon bet 20,000 and both players called. The turn came {A-Spades} and all three players checked. The river brought the {Q-Clubs} and Koon checked a third time.

Schaaf and Gulyy checked behind again and Koon let out a sigh and tabled {K-Hearts} {10-Spades} for Broadway and the other two players mucked, happy they didn't get fancy.
