The EPT9 Sanremo continued on Tuesday with Day 4 action from the Casino Sanremo. The remaining 66 players from a 797-player field returned to battle down to the final 24. It took a little over five levels of play, but eventually that number was reached with Jason Tompkins and his stack of 2,423,000 leading the way.

Tompkins got most of those chips in Level 22 when he opened from the cut-off and called when Amerigo Santoro three-bet to 74,000 from the small blind. The flop came down {8-}{5-}{4-} and Tompkins called a continuation-bet, which brought about the {3-} turn.

When faced with a 120,000 bet, Tompkins raised to 285,000 and then snap-called all in when Santoro shoved. Tompkins opened pocket eights for a set but was behind the wheel of Santoro, who held {a-}{2-}. The river came to the Irishman's rescue as it came {3-} to pair the board and give him the 2.5 million pot.

Other notables that managed to make it through to Day 5 included Thomas Gabriel, Artem Litvinov, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Michael Benvenuti, Matt Salsberg, Micah Raskin, Jason Lavallee, Ludovic Lacay and the Day 3 and 4 chip leader, Inge Forsmo.

Not everyone was so lucky on Day 4, as Roberto Romanello (65th-€12,000), David Vamplew (62nd-€12,000), Mike Watson (59th-€12,000), Alex Roumeliotis (54th-€14,000), Day 1a chip leader Erion Islamay (52nd-€14,000) and Morten Mortensen (51st-€14,000).

Not long after, Angelo Recchia opened for 32,000 from the hijack and was met with a three-bet to 75,000 from Justin Bonomo on the button. Both blinds cleared out, Recchia four-bet to 140,000, and Bonomo made the call. When the {10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{Q-Hearts} appeared on the flop, Recchia led out for a mediocre 65,000, and after thinking for a bit, Bonomo moved all in for 220,000. Recchia made a quick call and the cards were turned up.

Bonomo: {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}
Recchia: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Recchia held an over pair while Bonomo was drawing to a double-gutted straight draw. Unfortunately for the American, neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {8-Diamonds} river would complete it and his Main Event run came to an end in 36th place for €16,000. From there, Atanas Kavrakov (33rd-€16,000), Sofia Lovgren (30th-€19,000), and Isaac Haxton (26th-€19,000) all hit the rail before play came to end an for the night.

Day 5 action is set to kick off at 14:00 CET on Wednesday as the final 24 players will battle down to the final table of eight. Be sure to stay tuned for all of the action Sanremo right here on PokerNews

Luca Moschitta
Luca Moschitta

Luca Moschitta is our 25th place finisher and his exit brings play for today to an end.

Mackoff: {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Moschitta: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

The final board of the day ran {10-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

Rasin Rivers a Flush for a Double Up

We're not sure if there were any raises before, but we saw Yevgeniy Timoshenko betting 103,000 from under the gun before the flop and Micah Raskin making the call on the button. The flop went {2-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {10-Diamonds} and both players checked.

Timoshenko checked the {3-Diamonds} on the turn and so did Rasin and the dealer opened the {9-Diamonds} on the river. Timoshenko bet 240,000 and after giving it some thought Rasin moved all in for 291,000. Timoshenko had Rasin covered and made the call.

Rasin flipped {A-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds} showing the ace-high flush and Timoshenko asked if he needed to show the hand. After being told that he must do so Timoshenko unwillingly opened {A-Clubs} {10-Hearts}.

Mahmoud Doubles

Imed Mahmoud raised from early position and it folded to Michele di Lauro on the button who announced that he was all in. It folded back to Mahmoud and he called for his tournament life.

Mahmoud: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}
Di Lauro: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The board fell {5-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, allowing Mahmoud's hand to hold as the best hand. He doubled to about 420,000 here on the end of the day bubble.

No Comeback for Haxton

Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

There was no miracle comeback for Isaac Haxton even with his lucky beer that he bought in the break.

He was in the big blind and had just 15,000 behind. Charly Maracchione raised to 50,000 from the button and Haxton called all in blind.

Maracchione: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Haxton: {j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

The board ran {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Spades} to end his main event.

Rumour has it he jumped straight in the €10,000 High Roller event. For reporting on that event click here.

Taking Turns Doubling

Just prior to the break, a pot took place between Thomas Gabriel and Isaac Haxton, well two pots actually.

In the first, there was about 125,000 in the pot and a flop of {2-Clubs}{K-Spades}{J-Diamonds} when Haxton checked from the big blind and Gabriel moved all in from middle position. Haxton called off for 65,000 with {2-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}, and was well out in front against Gabriel's {K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}. Neither the {5-Hearts} turn nor {A-Hearts} river changed a thing, and Haxton doubled.

Two hands later, action folded around to Haxton on the button and he moved all in. This time it was Gabriel calling off for 171,000 total.

Haxton: {J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Gabriel: {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}

The {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop was great for Gabriel, and the {Q-Clubs} turn left Haxton drawing dead. The meaningless {7-Spades} was put out on the river for good measure, and Haxton was left with just 48,000.
